Last week's fatal bus crash in Arizona has brought bus safety into the news headlines once again. The bus in last week's accident was operating illegally, according to the Department of Transportation. Although the carrier, Tierra Santa, had been told by the Department of Transportation that its passenger carrier application had been turned down, the company continued to operate.

If you are taking a bus trip across state lines, you can look at your motor carrier's safety record before you travel. The Department of Transportation makes interstate motor carrier safety information available to the traveling public, and you can check your bus operator's passenger safety record online.

Yesterday I booked a hotel room for an event I'm attending later this year. As I read the "fine print" on the reservation screen, I realized that the hotel would also charge me a "resort fee" of $10 per day, which would cover fitness center access, a daily newspaper, two bottles of water, local calls (20 minutes per day), toll-free and credit card calls and internet access.

Didn't some of those things used to be free? It doesn't cost the hotel anything to allow me to use my own telephone credit card, so why am I paying for the privilege? And what if I don't use the fitness center or drink the water? Can I ask the hotel to take these charges off my bill?

Perhaps. Resort fee charges vary from hotel to hotel; some charge $5, some charge $20 and some don't charge anything at all. Hotel resort fee policies are equally variable. Some hotels will remove the resort fee from your bill and others will not.

What do you think? Should hotels assess "mandatory" resort fees or just bundle these charges into your bill? Would you pay a resort fee? Take our poll and share your opinion in the comments box below.

Even if snow is piled hip-high along the side of the road, visiting an aquarium is sure to send those winter blues away. You'll be indoors, for one thing, and you can learn about aquatic habitats around the world. Some aquariums have dolphin shows (watch out for the Splash Zone!) and others feature penguins, sharks and other popular marine animals. Behind-the-scenes tours, aquarium sleepovers (some allow you to bring air mattresses) and special events can really add to your aquarium experience. Aquariums appeal to young and old alike at any time of year.

It's the time of year, at least where I live, when spring is just around the corner but we're still stuck with snow, mud and gloomy skies. Cabin fever is all too real. My suggestion for overcoming winter's last stand, at least if you live in the northeastern U.S. or eastern Canada, is to find a maple syrup festival in your area.

I first heard of maple syrup festivals when I lived in West Virginia. In the middle of March, everyone I knew was heading out to the Highland Maple Festival in a neighboring Virginia county. It was freezing cold outside and mud was everywhere, but I went - and had a fantastic time touring sugar camps, buying way too many beautifully hand-crafted items and eating stacks of syrup-covered pancakes.

You can find maple syrup festivals almost anywhere syrup is produced. Our list of maple syrup festivals can help you locate a celebration in your area.
