Travel Photo of the Week: Yogodo Hall
<p><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/seniortravel/1/0/G/L/-/-/AsakusaYogodoHall400x300.jpg" border="0" alt="" hspace="5" width="300" height="225" align="middle" /></p> <p>Yogodo Hall, built in 1994, is part of the Senso-ji temple complex in Tokyo's Asakusa district. Senso-ji is an important Buddhist temple, Tokyo's oldest, which was built to house a golden statue of bodhisattva Kannon, the goddess of mercy and kindness, found by two fishermen in 628 A. D. The statue is hidden from view by long-established tradition.</p> <p>Yogodo Hall was built to commemorate the 1,200th anniversary of Ennin's birth. Ennin was a Buddhist priest who visited Senso-ji and felt inspired to create a copy of the hidden statue of bodhisattva Kannon that could be displayed and worshipped. Inside Yogodo Hall are statues of bodhisattva Kannon and eight Buddhas. The Buddhas are believed to protect the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac (dragon, monkey, ox, and so forth), and, thus, to protect the people born in each of those years.</p> <p>See more <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://collectibles.about.com/od/valuableresources/a/wordlesswednes.htm">Pictures of the Week at About.com</a>.</p> <p><i>Photo &#169; Steve Parode</i></p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/25/travel-photo-of-the-week-yogodo-hall.htm">Travel Photo of the Week: Yogodo Hall</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/">About.com Senior Travel</a> on Wednesday, January 25th, 2012 at 10:21:51.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/25/travel-photo-of-the-week-yogodo-hall.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/25/travel-photo-of-the-week-yogodo-hall.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://seniortravel.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/25/travel-photo-of-the-week-yogodo-hall.htm&#038;zItl=Travel Photo of the Week: Yogodo Hall">Email this</a></p>
Air Travel Etiquette
<img src = "http://0.tqn.com/d/seniortravel/1/0/F/L/-/-/LaGuardiaMarioTamaGetty400x248.jpg" hspace="5" align="right" width="170" height="105"> <p>Do you know any frequent fliers? Perhaps you're one yourself. One thing I have noticed about travelers who fly often (and I know many) is that they sometimes feel frustrated when their fellow passengers' actions slow down the airport security screening and airplane boarding processes.</p> <p>While <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://etiquette.about.com/od/BooksandBrands/a/Emily-Post.htm">Emily Post</a> could never have envisioned today's air travel situation (full-body scans, pat-downs, checked baggage fees, etc.), she certainly would have encouraged airline passengers to plan ahead and to be considerate of their fellow travelers. Today's frequent fliers tend to do just that; they <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/od/airtravel/a/airtraveletiquette.htm">pack and prepare</a> so that they spend as little time as possible in security lines and boarding queues.</p> <p>It all comes down to <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/od/airtravel/a/airtraveletiquette.htm">air travel etiquette</a>. If most air travelers <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/od/airtravel/a/airtraveletiquette.htm">prepare in advance and know how to get through security and board their airplanes quickly</a>, every passenger can find space for carry-on baggage and enjoy an on-time departure. Once in the air, the common rules of politeness apply, with a few <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/od/airtravel/a/airtraveletiquette.htm">air travel-specific additions</a>.</p> <p><i>Photo &#169; Mario Tama / Getty Images</i></p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/23/air-travel-etiquette.htm">Air Travel Etiquette</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/">About.com Senior Travel</a> on Monday, January 23rd, 2012 at 23:14:20.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/23/air-travel-etiquette.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/23/air-travel-etiquette.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://seniortravel.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/23/air-travel-etiquette.htm&#038;zItl=Air Travel Etiquette">Email this</a></p>
Undiscovered Ireland
<p><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/seniortravel/1/0/q/B/-/-/CelticStoneDonegalSmall201x300.jpg" border="0" alt="" hspace="5" width="201" height="300" align="middle" /></p> <p>You can see carved stones all over Ireland. Some are at famous places, like Newgrange and Knowth, while others, like this one, are found in small towns. This stone carving of King David and his harp stands next to a road in Carndonagh, County Donegal, near the town's pride and joy, the Donagh Cross, which dates to the 7th century.</p> <p>All of Ireland is like this. Even the smallest towns have something special to offer, and places that are at times swarming with tourists have quiet spots where you can take walks and discover the best of Ireland.</p> <p>The nice part is, you can plan a trip to any part of Ireland and find an <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/od/europetravel/tp/Undiscovered-Ireland.htm">out-of-the-way town or village to explore</a>. You can see remnants of ancient dolmens, ring forts and standing stones all over the country. You may need an Ordnance Survey map to find them, but they are there. Sure, you should see the Book of Kells and the Ring of Kerry, but save a bit of time for the smaller sights of <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/od/europetravel/tp/Undiscovered-Ireland.htm">"undiscovered" Ireland.</a> You'll be glad you did.</p> <p><b>See More:</b> <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/od/europetravel/tp/Italys-Undiscovered-Towns.htm">Undiscovered Towns in Italy</a> &#124; <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/od/europetravel/tp/Germanys-Undiscovered-Towns.htm">Germany's Undiscovered Towns</a> &#124; <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/od/europetravel/tp/Undiscovered-France.htm">Undiscovered France</a></p> <p><i>Photo &#169; Steve Parode</i></p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/19/undiscovered-ireland.htm">Undiscovered Ireland</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/">About.com Senior Travel</a> on Thursday, January 19th, 2012 at 22:17:26.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/19/undiscovered-ireland.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/19/undiscovered-ireland.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://seniortravel.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/19/undiscovered-ireland.htm&#038;zItl=Undiscovered Ireland">Email this</a></p>

Travel Photo of the Week: Edo Castle
<p><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/seniortravel/1/0/A/L/-/-/EdoCastleMoat400x300.jpg" border="0" alt="" hspace="5" width="300" height="225" align="middle" /></p> <p>Edo Castle, or Edo-jo in Japanese, lies right in the heart of Tokyo, Japan. It is surrounded by skyscrapers and bustling city streets. Until 1868, it was the stronghold of the Tokugawa family. Today, the Emperor and his family live in a palace surrounded by gardens on the grounds of Edo Castle.<p> <p>If you look closely, you will notice that Edo Castle's walls are made of stone. Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Tokugawa shogun, received Edo Castle and the surrounding area from Toyotomi Hideyoshi and realized that it was ideally situated for military purposes. Beginning in 1603, he brought stone from other parts of Japan and built the walls and moats that now surround Edo Castle. The castle became his headquarters and, eventually, the seat of power in Japan.</p> <p>See more <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://collectibles.about.com/od/valuableresources/a/wordlesswednes.htm">Pictures of the Week at About.com</a>.</p> <p><i>Photo &#169; Steve Parode</i></p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/18/travel-photo-of-the-week-edo-castle.htm">Travel Photo of the Week: Edo Castle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/">About.com Senior Travel</a> on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 at 09:31:26.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/18/travel-photo-of-the-week-edo-castle.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/18/travel-photo-of-the-week-edo-castle.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://seniortravel.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://seniortravel.about.com/b/2012/01/18/travel-photo-of-the-week-edo-castle.htm&#038;zItl=Travel Photo of the Week: Edo Castle">Email this</a></p>
